โI watch cooking change the cook, just as it transforms the foodโ โ Laura Esquivel
This quote could not ring truer for us. Our cooking journey started on a whim, but transform our lives it did. This is not your typical recipe post but a brief homage to our ongoing Ever Peckish adventure.
It all began with a noble intention- create an Instagram profile for a stressed Kurvin and hope that the imagery would rekindle his love of baking. That I stood to benefit with homebaked cake never crossed my mind *angel face emoji*. I chose Ever Peckish as the profile name because it describes him perfectly- the man is always hungry. I could not have envisioned what would unfold next. Kurvin not only picked up his apron; he also picked up his camera. And thus our food journey began…
Along this voyage, we would explore our Mauritian food heritage as well as South African flavours. Subsequently, we started a blog where we share recipes close to our hearts. During the pandemic, we channeled the gift of time into a baked goods business which turned into a passion project. We churned out Napolitaines, crackers and rusks as a part time hustle; eventually reaching a production ceiling in our small home kitchen. We also knew we had much to learn about running a food business.
Five months ago we were accepted into the the Maker’s Landing (V&A waterfront) Food Entrepreneur Business Programme after an intense but fun bootcamp. The programme was enlightening and deeply inspiring. Under the tutelage of the dynamic duo, Angie Smith & Chef Jenny Ward, we mapped out our business vision and improved our product range. We learnt fundamental business best practice which has laid a strong foundation upon which our enterprise may flourish. Further, we were warmly welcomed into an amazing food community which shares in our success and struggles.
We finished our programme last week- our hearts bursting with joy and gratitude. It has been another wonderful twist in this unfolding story of Ever Peckish. We cannot wait for the next turn but for now, we want to say a big, giant Thank You to all who have cheered us on and helped along the way!
