Cinnamon Rosemary Gin and Tonic

Jump to Recipe

This Cinnamon Rosemary Gin and Tonic is our solution to our yearly gluehwein envy. Christmas celebrations in the Southern Hemisphere are a tad different to the those up in the chilly, frosty North. Reindeer sweaters, warm fires and hot chocolate do not fit our warm weather.  However, summer is not stopping us from embracing the Christmas spirit and festive flavours.

Our festive version of G-&-T features a cinnamon stick which immediately brings a sweet, woody aroma.  A rosemary twig evokes the imagery of the pine and Christmas trees. Finally, a candied orange slice adds a touch of citrusy sweetness. And voila, our version of ‘Christmas-in-a-glass’, perfect for those looking for a festive, but cold drink.

QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT CINNAMON ROSEMARY GIN AND TONIC

Can I make a non-alcoholic version?
Yes! Simply skip the gin, it still tastes delicious.

I prefer my drinks sweeter. How can I sweeten this cocktail?
Dissolve more sugar in the gin. Alternatively, add a 1:1 sugar to water simple syrup to the drink (as sugar dissolves slowly in cold beverages).

Servings 4 glasses

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 2 tsp dark brown sugar
  • 4 sprigs rosemary
  • 180 mls (4 jigger measures) gin (around 12 tablespoons)
  • tonic water
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • In a tumbler, stir and dissolve the dark sugar in the gin.
  • To the serving glasses, add a handful of ice cubes, a cinnamon stick, a sprig of rosemary and a slice of candied orange (see note for instructions to make candied orange).
  • Pour over the gin; top with tonic, and enjoy cold.

Notes

If you do not have candied orange slices, you can easily make some.  To 1/2 cup white/brown sugar, add 1/2 cup water and heat until all the sugar is dissolved. Add thin slices of orange to the syrup and simmer for 20 minutes, turning once. Place the orange slices on a rack and allow to dry overnight. Store in the fridge and use within a couple of days.
